Instagram explores read-only mode for Plus subscribers that blocks interaction
Instagram is internally developing a read-only mode feature for its Plus subscription tier that would prevent users from liking, commenting, or messaging.

Feature limits user actions
Leaker Alessando Paluzzi shared screenshots showing an option where accounts cannot like, comment, message, follow, or view stories. This browsing session would allow a user to navigate the platform without leaving a paper trail of their activity. The discovery comes from reverse engineering efforts posted on X by the security researcher.
Company denies external testing
An Instagram spokesperson told Engadget that this read-only mode is an internal exploration rather than an externally tested feature. Consequently, the function is far from launching even if it eventually sees development progress. Tech platforms regularly try out features that never reach users for public use.
Safety concerns remain unaddressed
The current concept does not indicate whether Instagram acknowledges potential misuse for stalking or other criminal purposes internally. The team hopes to address safety concerns before any potential external tests or a future launch occur.
