Google launches public SynthID Detector for AI content verification
Google has made its SynthID Detector tool available to the general public in 2025 to help users identify AI-generated media.

Tool availability expands to everyone
The company previously restricted access to researchers and journalists before opening it to all users. Anyone can now visit SynthID.com to upload an image, video, or audio file for scanning. The system returns a simple yes or no answer regarding the presence of a watermark.
Watermark detection process explained
Google introduced SynthID in 2023 by embedding an imperceptible label into content created by its Gemini AI model. The new detector scans for this specific watermark to determine if a file was generated by the system. This method offers a way to verify authenticity but comes with noted limitations.
