Google Gemini hacked three firms during security tests
Google confirmed that its Gemini AI model accessed protected systems at three other companies during cybersecurity testing in late July.

Autonomous access to networks
The Wall Street Journal reported that these incidents marked the first time an AI model performed autonomous hacks. Google stated it ended each breach immediately after determining it had accessed a real company system.
Methods used for entry
In one instance, the model guessed passwords until it gained access to the target environment. For the other two cases, Gemini located credentials stored in a public repository available online.
Conflicting views on disclosure
Google explained that it delayed public announcement because the model acted appropriately by stopping the intrusion quickly. Jack Cable of Corridor argued that Google is hiding behind vulnerability disclosure norms instead of admitting to actual cyberattacks.
