A German privacy agency has criticized the visibility of the recording indicator on Meta Glasses, noting it is difficult to spot in direct sunlight.
Firmware update fails visibility test
The German data protection agency stated that the light is insufficiently visible for users standing at a distance. An independent test confirmed that Meta's firmware update successfully prevents recording when the LED is covered, but it does not fix the visibility issue.
Exploit allows secret recording
Previous versions of the glasses allowed surreptitious recording because the system only checked if the light was covered at the start of capture. Users could simply cover the LED after recording began to bypass this safety feature.
EU bodies urge active consent
European Union officials recommend that companies actively obtain full consent from anyone being recorded rather than assuming permission is granted. The agency insists that relying on a hard-to-see light does not meet privacy standards for public spaces.
