Commentator criticises FIA response

David Croft described the chaotic scenes on the formation lap as a farce. He questioned why the scenario had not been simulated before the season began. The incident involved several drivers slowing to a crawl or stopping completely.

Technical causes identified

The FIA confirmed that low engine speeds and wet-weather energy-management settings contributed to the power loss. Circuit configuration and low grip in wet conditions also played a part. A new power unit with almost 50 per cent electric content was introduced this year.

Pre-season testing occurred

Teams completed a shakedown in Barcelona before the main event. Six days of testing took place in Bahrain prior to the start of the season. These events happened before the chaotic race weekend in Malaysia.
