FAA reports laser strikes on aircraft fell for third consecutive year in 2026
The US Federal Aviation Administration released statistics Thursday showing a drop in reported laser strikes on planes during the first seven months of 2026.
California and Texas lead reports
California recorded the highest number of incidents with 614 cases. Texas followed with 445 reported strikes between January and July. New Mexico and Hawaii ranked highest when adjusted for population size.
Injuries and penalties remain high
Pilots have reported 322 injuries since the agency began tracking these reports in 2010. Violators face federal fines of up to $11,000 per incident. Criminal penalties can include five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
