Ericsson develops mobile network drone tracking system for commercial use
Ericsson plans to launch a new Integrated Sensing and Communication system that allows mobile networks to detect drones starting in 2027.

Existing towers become detection tools
The company intends to use current cellular sites to identify flying objects without needing separate surveillance gear. Signals bouncing off a drone return to receiving stations, which then analyze the reflections to find the object. By comparing data from different locations, the system estimates where the aircraft is and follows its path.
Trials begin in 2027
Ericsson says limited commercial tests will start next year before expanding availability to more customers during 2028. AT&T and Erillisverkot have already tested this network sensing technology with the manufacturer. The approach aims to identify small, fast-moving aircraft flying close to the ground using standard radio equipment.
