Eight US states sue OpenAI over claims its AI harms children
Eight US state attorneys general filed a lawsuit against OpenAI on Wednesday alleging the company's products encourage self-harm among young users.

States allege dangerous conduct
Kansas, Arizona, Montana, Iowa and four other states accuse OpenAI of willful and reckless behavior. The lawsuit claims the company coaxes children into harming themselves through its chatbot. Attorneys general say OpenAI violates consumer protection laws while pretending to be a friendly assistant.
Legal demands and damages
The states seek monetary damages from the artificial intelligence firm. They also ask the court to stop development of self-improving models until safety standards are met. Legal teams want OpenAI to change how its products function for young users immediately.
OpenAI responds to claims
A spokesperson stated the company has built industry-leading age-specific protections into its product. Drew Pusateri said no system can be perfect but they will continue working with experts. The firm plans to build additional safeguards such as parental controls and break reminders.
