Atari released the first wireless game controller in 1982
The Atari 2600 peripheral known as the Cynex Game Mate 2 launched around 1982 as the earliest wireless console-compatible gamepad.

Early wireless controller history
Wireless controllers have existed since the 1980s, though technology improved over subsequent decades. The Cynex Game Mate 2 utilized radio frequencies to connect with the Atari 2600 system. This device allowed players more freedom compared to earlier infrared alternatives that required direct line of sight.
Signal transmission advantages
Unlike later infrared pads, the Game Mate 2 did not need to point directly at the console for recognition. Objects blocking the signal path caused fewer issues with this radio frequency based design. Later iterations of wireless technology would eventually match the performance levels seen today.
