Reports of cracked displays

People shared photos on social media showing lines appearing on the right side of the display. The damage appeared in the middle of the screen above the hinge area. Apple acknowledged an issue and said it is replacing damaged units.

Technical analysis of the hinge

Shahram Mokhtari from iFixit examined the device to understand the potential cause. He stated that contact between the delicate inner screen and a part of the hinge creates stress. This pressure causes a hotspot that damages the extremely sensitive flexible display.

Mechanism of screen failure

The hinge contains gears, springs, and joints designed to let the device close flat. These components work together while trying to avoid creating a deeper crease in the closed state. The inner screen pushes up against a specific part of the hinge during operation.
