Mechanisms of post-meal walking

Gentle body movement mechanically stimulates food progression through the stomach and intestines. This action speeds up gastric emptying while limiting fermentation time to reduce gas. Engaging muscles during a walk also allows them to absorb blood glucose directly.

Recommended duration and timing

Ten to fifteen minutes are sufficient to reap the main benefits for digestion and energy. A long sustained workout immediately after a heavy meal should be avoided instead. It is best not to wait before getting up from the table.
