Route connects island fortress to coast

The driver crossed a causeway linking the fortress island of Monemvasia to the south-eastern coast. Yiannis Ritsos once lived in a house near the castle walls that now serves as a museum.

Harvest festivals celebrate local produce

Villages in Laconia hold boisterous harvest festivals for wines, oranges and chestnuts while Messinia celebrates figs. Olives are harvested near Kalamata during this season when mountain valleys show green pine forests.

Tavernas serve locals not tourists

Autumn brings a change where tavernas are alive with locals rather than tourists. The region offers healthy air and food grown metres away from the villages.
