Shanghai Grand Opera House opens after decade of construction
The Shanghai Grand Opera House opened its doors to the public on October 17 following ten years of building.

Design and cost details
Norway-based firm Snohetta collaborated with a local institute to design the venue. The project cost approximately 3.9 billion yuan, which is around US$590 million. The complex covers an area of 147,000 square metres.
Three performance venues inside
The facility contains three spaces with a combined seating capacity of 4,200 people. Harmony Hall holds 2,000 seats and serves as the flagship location. The Soar Theatre accommodates 1,200 guests for smaller productions while the Open Stage fits 1,000.
Public rooftop access
An expansive geometric roof creates a civic plaza that is free to enter. This outdoor area functions as an observation deck and open-air performance space. Visitors can access the rooftop year-round without paying an entry fee.
