Sable Elyse Smith changes exhibition title to Clockwork after winning FLAG Art Foundation Prize
Brooklyn artist Sable Elyse Smith opened her new exhibition titled Clockwork at New York's FLAG Art Foundation on September 24.
Artist explains original project name
Smith initially called the project American Horror Show after winning a $200,000 prize in 2024. She decided the title was too blunt and felt the word American would be empty. The exhibition now uses the title Clockwork to describe how systems of power operate.
Exhibition explores history of oppression
The work addresses a long troubled history in the United States rather than just current events. Smith uses video and sculpture to break down forms of oppression that feed into each other. The show aims to create a visual vocabulary for articulating these systems.
Show follows Austin presentation
The exhibition at FLAG Art Foundation opened after the artist completed a stint in Contemporary Austin. Smith plans to use the award money to continue developing this new project privately.
