Opening film explores identity themes

Visitors first encounter a short film from 1976 titled Permutations upon entering the gallery. The work uses chance operations to display six one-second shots of Cha's sister Bernadette. One frame later shows Theresa's face, highlighting ideas about mistaken identity and recognition.

Curator notes radical context of 1976

Danielle A. Jackson, the curator at Artists Space, stated that featuring an Asian woman prominently in 1976 was quite radical. Cha was born in Busan, South Korea, and immigrated to the United States in 1962. She studied at UC Berkeley from 1969 through 1978 while earning four degrees.

Work spans multiple artistic mediums

Her body of work includes photography, installation, video, performance, and books alongside literature and language. The exhibition presents her vast and varied contributions to the art world.
