Carpenter rejects serendipity claim

The director expressed skepticism about the idea that releasing two such films simultaneously was a coincidence. He questioned how many adventure pictures dealing with Chinese mysticism major studios had released in the previous twenty years. Carpenter noted that only two of them appeared at the exact same time.

Film selection process

When offered both projects to direct, the filmmaker selected the one he found more interesting. The resulting movie blended horror elements with a raucous action-comedy style. It featured an origin story that seemed unlikely for its era.
