Hong Kong-style milk tea gains popularity in Tokyo cafe scene
Tokyo cafes are increasingly adding Hong Kong-style milk tea and related dinery items to their menus as black tea consumption rises.

Tea boom drives new cafe trends
The Japan Tea Association reports that the country is currently experiencing a third black tea boom. Convenience stores like 7-Eleven are expanding tea machine options to around 2,000 locations by early 2026. Suntory recently released its own version of Hong Kong-style milk tea under the Craft Boss line.
Specific shops offer traditional items
Several new cafes in the capital now serve black tea menus alongside egg tarts and dim sum. These spots also feature pineapple buns which are staples of Hong Kong-style diners. Young women are increasingly visiting these upscale locations for afternoon tea and social media photos.
Local brands join global trend
While Taiwanese milk tea remains familiar to Japanese consumers, a small number of new venues have adopted the Hong Kong style. This variety allows existing dinery favorites to find room within the growing tea market. The shift represents a change in how traditional cha chaan teng items are presented.
