Official budget reaches forty nine billion pounds

The official price tag for the expansion is now set at a staggering £49bn. Overall spending on the project and operating costs could eventually exceed £100bn. An unknown portion of this total will be paid by taxpayers.

Opening date pushed to 2039

The proposal has been debated for twenty years with the opening constantly postponed. A target date of 2035 has now become 2039. Some observers suggest the project might not open until 2045.

Airlines remain sceptical about expansion

Airlines are currently sceptical about the plan while passengers may face higher surcharges. Fields around rival airport Gatwick lie empty and capacity at Stansted remains underused.
