New circuit location details

The event will take place on a new purpose-built track in Bugesera. This site is located south of the capital city Kigali and near the international airport. The circuit was designed by former driver Alex Wurz to use the area's elevation changes.

Agreement announcement context

Rwanda president Paul Kagame announced the partnership at a ceremony in Kigali on Tuesday morning. Formula 1 stated that years of collaboration ensured the right foundations were in place for this project. The sport aims to expand its profile in Africa as a relatively unexplored market.

Timing and scheduling plans

The race is expected to begin once the track construction is completed early in the next decade. Organizers have not yet established where the event will fit into the annual schedule. The sport likely wants to avoid holding the race during the main rain season.
