George Russell leads first practice in Baku while Antonelli stops
George Russell set the fastest time during the first practice session of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on Thursday as championship leader Kimi Antonelli stopped his car due to a hydraulic leak.
Russell edges Verstappen in timing
Mercedes driver George Russell recorded the quickest lap ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. Both Ferrari drivers finished behind them with times just over four tenths of a second slower than the top pace.
Antonelli faces time deficit
Kimi Antonelli was fifth fastest before stopping at Turn One because smoke appeared from his engine cooling vents. The incident forced him to miss half of the session and lose significant track time compared to other drivers.
Other teams run varied plans
Ferrari did not use soft tyres during this part of the weekend while Audi and Racing Bulls completed their own programmes. Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad finished seventh and eighth ahead of Haas driver Esteban Ocon.
