Eagles players suffer heat and melting cleats during Nashville game
Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni received an IV after extreme heat melted player cleats on Nissan Stadium turf during Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans.
Extreme turf temperatures reported
The temperature on the artificial surface reached 157 degrees Fahrenheit according to the television broadcast. Air temperature was 95 degrees with a heat index near 105 at kickoff time. Water was poured onto shoes to help keep players cool during the match.
Coach and players affected
Head coach Nick Sirianni did not play a single snap because of the conditions. Offensive lineman Cam Jurgens stated his feet were burning and he replaced multiple pairs of cleats. Another player noted that halftime required assistance similar to a NASCAR pit crew to prepare for the second half.
Calls for grass fields
Jordan Mailata, the NFL Players Association representative, argued that turf creates dangerous playing positions. He said the heat sits and bounces up into players standing on it. The union wants to push for all grass fields to establish a safer standard of play.
