Pascal Gross scored in the 31st minute to give Brighton an early lead. Charalampos Kostoulas added a second goal just before halftime. Chema Andres extended the lead to three goals nine minutes after the break.

Arsenal lost first points

This result marked Arsenal's first dropped points of the season. The Gunners had been chasing an eighth straight victory before the match ended. Mikel Arteta admitted his team was not their usual combative selves.

Arteta offered explanation

The manager stated that Arsenal put themselves in trouble multiple times during the game. He noted they need to recover from such situations much quicker than they did. This loss ended a perfect start to the campaign for the defending champions.
