Reasons for reducing bird numbers

Avian influenza outbreaks and rising operational costs have driven the decision to cut the collection. Difficulties in transporting animals since Brexit have also contributed to the decline. The site previously held around 500 birds but now keeps fewer than 100.

Changes to visitor programmes

The reserve will close its guided school tour programme alongside the captive bird facility. Self-guided visits for schools are expected to continue at the location. Both government departments have been contacted for comment on the situation.
