World Meteorological Organization reports global water resources are declining
The World Meteorological Organization published its 2025 report on global water resources today, stating that continental water volumes are decreasing.
River and groundwater levels drop
Rivers worldwide held less water in 2025 compared to the period between 1991 and 2020. This reduction occurred in 36 percent of all basin areas monitored by the organization. Groundwater levels were also lower than the reference period at 65 percent of monitoring stations.
Glaciers lose significant mass
Glaciers lost approximately 400 gigatons of mass during the last year. This decline contributes to the overall unbalance in the global water cycle. Extreme droughts and floods are resulting from these shifting conditions.
