Volunteers clean Bristol Harbour for ten years before funding ends
A volunteer group in Bristol has marked ten years of removing unusual waste from the harbour before facing uncertainty over its future funding.
Unusual items found during decade
The initiative started in September 2016 to remove plastic pollution from local waterways. Over the last ten years, volunteers recovered objects ranging from an inflatable doll to a Nintendo Switch. They also pulled out single shoes, glasses, and a kettle from the water.
Monitoring records waste removal
Recorded monitoring between 2021 and 2023 showed volunteers removing more than 880kg of waste. Almost 390kg of that total came from the specific monitoring period mentioned in reports. The founder noted that much floating rubbish cannot be reached from the harbourside.
Project future remains uncertain
The group was later taken on by an adventure sports centre called All Aboard Watersports. Funding sources are now running out according to the founder. The project continues but its long-term financial support is not guaranteed.
