University of Chicago scientists find electrons moving slowly in new quantum state
Researchers at the University of Chicago discovered a strange quantum state where large numbers of electrons move unusually slowly in Fe5GeTe2 on October 1, 2026.

Unexpected behavior in magnetic material
Scientists working with the layered magnetic material Fe5GeTe2 found that huge numbers of electrons move together extremely slowly. This group of electrons remains quantum coherent while traveling at this reduced speed. The discovery was made by researchers in the laboratory of Asst. Prof. Shuolong Yang.
Challenge to current theories
The observed behavior contradicts existing theoretical predictions about how the material's magnetism should function. These findings suggest scientists may need to rethink the underlying physics of such materials. The results were published in Science Advances following work done over the past decade.
