This situation caused nesting males to spend significantly more time defending their territories and eggs. The pollutant ethinylestradiol is a synthetic estrogen used in oral contraceptives that enters rivers and lakes after treatment.

Population survival faces new risks

The study revealed ecological impacts that laboratory studies failed to detect regarding fish behavior. These behavioral changes are critical for population survival because they alter how males interact with rivals. Municipal wastewater treatment removes much of the compound, but small amounts still enter water bodies.
