Study links GenAI use to better grades and tech confidence for online adult learners
University of Phoenix scholars published research on generative AI usage among online adult students in the journal Artificial Intelligence in Education on June 30.
Survey covers nontraditional undergraduates
Researchers surveyed 491 nontraditional undergraduate students taking online general education courses. Of the participants, 212 individuals reported using tools such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot for their coursework.
Usage tied to performance gains
The study found that more frequent use of these tools was significantly associated with higher academic performance. Students who used the technology also showed stronger confidence in their own technical skills.
Other factors did not matter
Lower confidence in reading, writing, and math did not predict how often students used the tools. Similarly, greater time demands from work or family responsibilities were not significant predictors of usage.
