Study finds gaps in bison parasite management across southern and central US
Researchers at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine published a new study in Veterinary Parasitology revealing management gaps for gastrointestinal parasites in North American bison.
Drug resistance risks from frequent use
The drugs producers rely on to control these parasites can become less effective when used too frequently. Using medication without knowing which animals actually need treatment also contributes to the problem. This overuse threatens the limited drugs available to ranchers in the region.
Bison face more parasitic issues than cattle
Dr Kaylee Kipp noted that diagnostic evidence shows bison have more parasitic issues compared to beef cattle. Gastrointestinal nematodes cause diarrhea, poor weight gain and reduced production in infected animals. Severe infections can lead to significant health problems for the herds.
