Students with CPS contact miss significantly more school than peers
New research from The Ohio State University shows adolescents involved with child protective services miss more school across twenty urban cities.
Higher absence rates for vulnerable students
A study tracking 3,334 adolescents found that children with CPS contact were absent for both excused and unexcused reasons. These students missed more class time compared to their classmates who did not have such involvement.
Teachers report attendance issues more often
Educators contacted the families of these students fourteen percentage points more frequently regarding attendance problems. The researchers noted that teachers identified these specific groups as having distinct challenges with regular school presence.
Students feel disconnected from their schools
The adolescents reported feeling less connected to their educational environments than other students in the same study. This lack of connection may contribute to the higher rates of absenteeism observed in the data.
