Spanish researchers identify first Diplodocus fossils in Europe
Paleontologists from the Dinopolis Foundation in Teruel, eastern Spain, published research on Tuesday confirming the discovery of Diplodocus remains dating to 150 million years ago.
Fossil discovery details
The team recovered fourteen tail vertebrae and several chevron bones from a single specimen. These fossils were extracted from sediment layers that are approximately 150 million years old. Lead author Sergio Sanchez Fenollosa stated the find represents the first evidence of this genus outside North America.
Specimen size and context
Co-author Alberto Cobos noted the animal likely measured around 25 metres in total length. This discovery joins other giant Jurassic sauropods previously found in the Teruel area. The study was published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.
