Record-breaking average temperatures

The average temperature reached 22.5C, which is 3.4C above the 1991-2020 reference period norm. This figure exceeded the average summer temperature for the same reference period for the first time.

Extreme heat and dry conditions

El Granado in the southwest registered 45.7C on September 3, matching the all-time monthly record. Mainland Spain received only 36% of the normal rainfall expected for the month.

Heat alerts issued

AEMET briefly issued its highest red alert for heat in parts of Andalusia. This was the first time such warnings had been sent in September since they started in 2007.
