SpaceX launched its Starship rocket from Texas on Monday to attempt the vehicle's first entry into Earth orbit.

Mission goals and satellite deployment

The flight carried 26 next-generation Starlink satellites intended for deployment in orbit. The upper stage separated from the Super Heavy booster about 26 minutes after lift-off to begin circling the planet.

Mission controllers decided to proceed with the orbital burn despite an engine failure during ascent. The spacecraft successfully achieved orbit before the mission was cut short due to technical problems.

The first-stage booster dropped into the Gulf of Mexico shortly after liftoff as planned. The test flight ended earlier than the scheduled 10 hours because of the mid-flight engine issue.
