Singapore explores cooling alternatives to reduce energy use

Singapore is testing new cooling methods like chilled beams to lower its heavy reliance on air conditioning.

High dependence on cooling systems

About 99 percent of private residences in the city-state have cooling units installed. Local building emissions account for one-fifth of total output, while cooling consumes 40 to 60 percent of a structure's energy. Compressor units release hot air back into the environment during operation.

Active chilled beams offer options

Some buildings are installing active chilled beams that use perforated panels with cooling coils mounted on ceilings. A chiller plant cools water down to 9C before pumping it into the system nozzles. Air is blasted through these small openings inside the beams simultaneously.
