Seoul National University team creates circular mRNA to boost protein output
A research team at Seoul National University has developed a synthetic biology method that converts linear messenger RNA into a ring shape inside microbial cells.

New technology increases production efficiency
The researchers named the innovation CRESEnT, which stands for Circular RNA Expression for Stable and Enhanced Translation. This process simultaneously improves mRNA stability and protein production efficiency within the cell factories.
Fluorescent protein yields rise significantly
Tests showed that circularization increased fluorescent protein production by up to 5.95-fold compared to a control group without the modification. Intracellular mRNA levels also rose by 3.95-fold, while the amount of protein produced per molecule grew by 1.51-fold.
Method works across multiple species
The team verified the technology in Escherichia coli as well as Bacillus subtilis and Corynebacterium glutamicum. They successfully applied this approach to produce valuable compounds including flaviolin, itaconic acid, lycopene and violacein.
