Seoul National University team confirms 40-year-old plastic mixing prediction
Researchers at Seoul National University have experimentally confirmed a forty-year-old theoretical prediction regarding how plastic layers mix by altering polymer shape.

Linear and ring polymers compared
A research team led by Professor So Youn Kim worked with colleagues from the Department of Chemistry to test mixing at interfaces. They kept molecular weights identical while changing one material from a thread-like linear polymer into a ring-shaped structure without altering chemical composition. The study found that switching to a ring architecture increased the mixing width from 1.9 nanometers to 5.0 nanometers.
Topology controls the interface
The results show that interfacial mixing is controlled solely through polymer topology rather than chemical changes. This marks the first direct observation of the topological entropy effect at an actual polymer interface. The phenomenon was originally proposed through theory and simulations approximately forty years ago.
