Semmelweis University researchers identify non-inflammatory drivers of rheumatoid arthritis pain

Researchers at Semmelweis University in Hungary report that depression, sleep disorders, and lifestyle factors can sustain rheumatoid arthritis symptoms even when inflammation is controlled.

Hidden factors sustain chronic pain

Scientists found that conditions like obesity and smoking may keep symptoms active despite effective therapy. Sleep problems and depression also contribute to the persistence of pain and fatigue in patients. These elements act alongside inflammation to maintain difficult-to-treat cases.

New model aids treatment planning

The team published a new framework in Nature Reviews Rheumatology and The Lancet Rheumatology to help doctors spot these causes early. This approach allows clinicians to tailor treatments without making unnecessary medication changes. Identifying these drivers helps address the needs of the 6-28 percent of patients who do not achieve remission.
