Scientists transport and store antiprotons by road for first time

The BASE collaboration at CERN in Geneva successfully transported 92 antiprotons by road and stored them for over a month in March 2026.

Mobile trap moves antimatter

Researchers loaded a purpose-built trap onto a truck to move the particles. This experiment took place at the Antimatter Factory facility within the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The team led by Professor Dr Stefan Ulmer and Dr Christian Smorra achieved this milestone in March 2026.

Long-term storage success

The mobile transport vessel held the antiprotons for more than a month, marking a world first. Scientists used ultra-high-vacuum Penning traps to confine these antimatter counterparts of protons. They plan to compare proton and antiproton properties to seek differences between matter and antimatter.
