Initial collection attempts fail

Zachary Kelso, a research assistant working with Sam Gershman, tried to catch worms while the Charles River was frozen. He used a hammer to break through the ice but found the local planarians were not suitable for the experiment. Subsequent efforts in Eugene, Oregon, also yielded unsatisfactory results.

Further searches yield no success

Kelso then traveled to Michigan lakes in June 2025 wearing thigh-high waders to gather more specimens. Despite turning over rocks and using meat bait, the worms collected there did not work either. Families watching from the shore noted his unusual attire during these repeated failed attempts.
