Scientists report declining pay and rising living costs in global survey
A 2026 job satisfaction survey involving nearly 4,000 researchers from 133 countries found that many scientists feel their salaries are worsening.

Survey methodology and scope
The study was created in partnership with Thinks Insight & Strategy and launched in May. It collected responses from 3,882 self-selecting participants across 133 nations. The group included 31% female respondents and 19% from minority ethnic groups.
Financial struggles for researchers
Many participants stated that their current income no longer covers basic living expenses. One lecturer in northern Nigeria noted he received only one pay rise since 2024. He now borrows money and takes extra jobs to survive without inflation adjustments.
