Scientists name new wild cat species found in Bolivia
Researchers have identified and named a previously unknown wild cat species living at a sanctuary in the Yungas region of Bolivia.
Discovery at local sanctuary
A small, spotted feline had lived unnoticed for years before scientists examined it. A colleague noticed the animal looked unusual and invited biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz to study it. The cat arrived after a local family could not keep it as a pet.
Physical characteristics noted
The male specimen measures 18 inches from head to tail base and weighs about three pounds. Its light brown coat features dark spots similar to those of a leopard. The animal is smaller than an average house cat.
Genetic analysis confirms status
Scientists compared genomes from over 30 cats across Colombia, Peru, and Brazil to place the new species in the feline family tree. DNA samples from bones and skins in U.S. and European museums helped complete the genetic picture.
