New magnetic mineral found in glass

The team identified a face-centered cubic form of gamma iron within tiny impact-glass particles. This nanoscale metallic iron acts as a stable magnetic signal preserved inside the samples. The discovery represents the first time this specific iron phase has been seen in natural Moon materials.

Study published in scientific journal

Prof Haifeng Du led the research effort at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Hefei. Dr Long Li noted that the tiny magnetic fossil helps explain ancient lunar history. The full study appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on September 16.
