Chronic stress harms hedgehog populations

Prolonged exposure to danger reduces immune function and lowers reproduction rates among European hedgehogs. Environmental changes such as habitat fragmentation and reduced food availability contribute to these extended stress responses. Identifying specific causes of distress helps conservationists support rehabilitation efforts for the roughly 40,000 hedgehogs currently in U.K. captivity.
