Researchers launch preprint journal club to teach peer review skills
Early-career researchers at the University of California, San Francisco will join a new preprint journal club starting in the 2025-26 academic year.

Current training gaps for students
Universities currently teach students how to design experiments and analyse data but rarely include peer review in formal curricula. Most early-career researchers learn these critical skills through informal mentorship rather than structured programs.
Existing platforms for practice
Initiatives like PREreview allow researchers to openly discuss preprints outside the standard journal process. The Preprint Club enables participants to select manuscripts for discussion with peers and senior faculty mentors.
New UCSF initiative details
The Bakar ImmunoX Initiative collaborated with organizers to create the ImmunoX Preprint JC. This group aims to help trainees develop a critical eye through practical experience alongside experienced researchers.
