New imaging technique used

Researchers combined cryo-electron tomography with correlative light and electron microscopy to achieve high resolution. This approach allowed them to visualize the nucleolus where ribosomes form within living cells. The method produced subnanometer-resolution structures of many intermediates along the assembly pathway.

Previous knowledge expanded

The study complements earlier insights that were obtained from structures outside their native cellular context. Scientists had previously discovered many underlying mechanisms for building ribosomes but lacked in situ understanding. These new results expand the collection of molecular snapshots available to the scientific community.
