Researchers identify new gene family in harmful E. coli strains

Scientists from Tokyo Metropolitan University have identified a dispersal mechanism and new gene family in chain-like adherence pattern varieties of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.

Bacteria form chains without separating

The team found that individual bacteria attach to a surface and elongate before dividing. This process creates long chains where the cells never separate from one another. When flow tears chain ends loose, those fragments can attach elsewhere to spread the strain.

New gene family controls structure

Researchers identified a specific new gene family that mediates the formation of these chains. Understanding this mechanism helps illuminate how infection occurs in cases lacking the usual LEE pathway. The study offers potential insights into developing treatments for severe food poisoning outbreaks.
