Researchers find single Hooded Vulture at Ghana slaughterhouse
Scientists investigated critically endangered Hooded Vultures at a large slaughterhouse in Ghana on September 25, 2026.
Slaughterhouses as feeding grounds
Hooded Vultures historically lived near people to help dispose of waste. Recent landscape changes have left slaughterhouses as the few places where these birds can reliably find food. In parts of West Africa, more than a hundred vultures once gathered in a single tree beside such sites.
Field research project results
A recent field project visited a huge slaughterhouse located on top of a hill in Ghana. The site slaughtered so many cattle that blood ran down the hillside into a marsh below. Despite enough discarded carrion to feed hundreds of birds, researchers found only one Hooded Vulture.
Bird behavior during study
The single vulture fled immediately when researchers approached the location. It spread its wings to a full six-foot span while circling up over the slaughterhouse. The bird then flew away into the bright midday sky.
