Researchers find moral language boosts online engagement only up to a point

A team from Chile and US universities analyzed social media posts in September 2026 to determine how moral wording affects user interaction.

Study examines three platforms

Researchers at Universidad del Desarrollo, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Northwestern University studied content from three online platforms. They published their findings in a paper within Nature Human Behaviour. The team investigated whether using moral words always leads to more reposts and replies.

Engagement peaks then drops

The analysis suggests that moral language is linked to higher engagement only up to a specific limit. After reaching this point, posts containing such language tend to elicit fewer interactions from users. First author Cristian Candia noted that filling a message with moral words does not necessarily make it more engaging.
