Researchers engineer stiff thermal insulator that beats natural materials

Scientists at North Carolina State University have developed a new dense material that acts as an extreme thermal insuperior to any found in nature.

Material properties and performance

The engineered substance combines high stiffness with extremely low thermal conductivity. This combination approaches the theoretical limit for how well a nonporous material can block heat flow. Researchers achieved this by applying advanced molecular engineering to a specific class of materials.

Production and potential uses

The team successfully printed the material as a thin film at large scales. Potential applications range from cookware and electronic devices to space travel equipment. Dali Sun noted that creating such stiff insulators was previously considered a significant challenge.
