Researchers develop chemistry to destroy forever chemicals in water

Scientists at Arizona State University and international partners have created a method to break down per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances instead of just filtering them.

Conventional methods leave waste behind

Most current treatments separate these contaminants from water using activated carbon or membrane filtration. The captured chemicals remain in spent filters, brines, or concentrated waste that requires disposal. This process does not eliminate the substances permanently.

New technique breaks chemical bonds

The new approach attacks the problem by destroying the harmful molecules rather than moving them. Researchers developed a chemistry that captures and destroys per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances forever. This method prevents the contaminants from staying in waste streams.
